Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated a dengue awareness campaign targeting kids at community schools, trying to minimize the likely spread of the mosquito-borne virus ahead of the monsoon season.
According to Rishi Prasad Bhusal, Focal Person for the Epidemic Prevention and Control Programme at KMC, the Health Department has launched the campaign among Grade 8 and 9 students in 32 community schools around the city. The initiative began with a session at Shivapuri Secondary School in Maharajgunj, Ward No. 3.
Kathmandu Model Secondary School Bhusal asserted that the program is supposed to sensitize pupils on the causes, prevention, and treatment of dengue, with the intention of enabling them to distribute knowledge among their families and communities. The KMC intends to contact at least 3,200 students, basically mobilizing them as “messengers” in the campaign against dengue.
With the coming of monsoon, the danger of dengue epidemics grows because to the increasing volume of stagnant water, which serves as a breeding grounds for mosquitoes. In response, the KMC has targeted early education and community involvement to lessen the risk.
Sita Thapa, a representative of Ward No. 3, said that additional discussions and engagement activities will be done at the community level to promote awareness. She also underlined that a “Search Larvae and Destroy” campaign will be launched in the next phase to destroy mosquito breeding places.
The Health Department has encouraged homes to keep vigilant, especially since recent rains may have provided favorable settings for mosquito larvae in water-holding containers and sites.
The KMC continues to promote preventative measures and community involvement as essential components in limiting the spread of dengue inside the city.
